Montenegro is a Cortijada (collection of ‘Cortijos‘ or farmsteads) and currently has only 5 adult inhabitants. It is on the old GR 7 trading route (now a long-distance footpath) that runs from Algeciras to Greece.

Aben Aboo, the last Moorish King in Spain, had a farm here. He was killed during the last Moorish revolt of (1568-1571) after which the Moors were finally expelled from the Alpujaras. All his possessions were distributed to Christian families brought from other areas of Spain in 1652: Blanco, Medina, Romera, Ruiz and Vela.

Fiesta:
The Pilgrimage of Our Lady of Montenegro is celebrated on May 13 (unless it is a Sunday when the local priest is otherwise occupied!). There is a procession down from the school at Yegen and there are normally visitors also from Yator and other local villages. A service is held ouside the Chapel of Fatima (the Ermita) followed by picnics/barbecues and music.
